Even though they were identified fifty years ago, adult stem cells were "re-discovered" in just the last decade (2000-2010). Adult stem cells do the things we always knew about before but have now been found to have critical body healing responsibilities throughout life. It's been scientifically shown that adult stem cells are responsible for replacing diseased or injured cells with healthy new ones, which is absolutely necessary to recover from illnesses. We would die of otherwise trivial diseases without this adult stem cell healing system. It's stunning and a little shocking that such a central biological and medically important reality would have escaped detection in science until just recently, even though adult stem cell treatments have actually been used for bone marrow transplants for over 40 years to successfully help leukemia and other cancers patients.
Now that we know the central role of adult stem cells in the healing process, research has begun to focus directly on ways to activate a patient's own adult stem cells to help them get well. Now that we are aware that the adult stem cell healing system exists, medical science can focus its attention to learning how to augment it effectively by all means imaginable, which includes adding medications and/or natural substances that assist the adult stem cell healing process.
Adult stem cell therapy is believed by many to be the very best hope for the treatment of previously untreatable or poorly treatable conditions. As it turns out the reason we do not heal from these poorly treatable chronic conditions is that the natural adult stem cell healing process is stuck or even blocked by defects in the chemical signals required for the healing system's activation and progress, or by our own immune system's over activity. These major insights were entirely impossible before the adult stem cell healing process was properly identified.
Through this exciting and evolving process we are beginning to see adult stem cell treatments emerge that show great promise in the treatment of orthopedic disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), multiple sclerosis (MS), heart diseases, auto-immune illnesses, neurological disorders, and many others. The excitement is palpable. This new medical focus on the adult stem cell healing process will advance and evolve medicine rapidly over the next few decades in ways that were hitherto impossible without it.
